Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. There are also many other themes in the series, such as love and prejudice.[10]

The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis. It is considered a classic of children's literature and is the author's best-known work, having sold over 120 million copies in 41 languages. Written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954 and illustrated by Pauline Baynes, The Chronicles of Narnia have been adapted several times, complete or in part, for radio, television, stage, and cinema. In addition to numerous traditional Christian themes, the series borrows characters and ideas from Greek and Roman mythology, as well as from traditional British and Irish fairy tales.

The Chronicles of Narnia present the adventures of children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the fictional realm of Narnia, a place where animals talk, magic is common, and good battles evil. Each of the books (with the exception of The Horse and His Boy) features as its protagonists children from our world who are magically transported to Narnia, where they are called upon to help the Lion Aslan handle a crisis in the world of Narnia.

The seven books
The Chronicles of Narnia have been in continuous publication since 1954 and have sold over 100 million copies in 41 languages.[1][2] Lewis was awarded the 1956 Carnegie Medal for The Last Battle, the final book in the Narnia series. The books were written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954 but were written in neither the order they were originally published nor in the chronological order in which they are currently presented.[3] The original illustrator was Pauline Baynes and her pen and ink drawings are still used in publication today. The seven books that make up The Chronicles of Narnia are presented here in the order in which they were originally published (see reading order below). Completion dates for the novels are English (Northern Hemisphere) seasons.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
Main article: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, completed in the winter of 1949[3] and published in 1950, tells the story of four ordinary children: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie. They discover a wardrobe in Professor Digory Kirke's house that leads to the magical land of Narnia, which is currently under the spell of the evil White Witch. The four children fulfill an ancient, mysterious prophecy while in Narnia. The Pevensie children help Aslan (Aslan is the Turkish word for lion) and his army save Narnia from the evil White Witch, who has reigned over the kingdom of Narnia in winter for 100 years.

Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
Main article: Prince Caspian
Completed in the autumn of 1949 and published in 1951, Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia tells the story of the Pevensie children's second trip to Narnia. They are drawn back by the power of Susan's horn, blown by Prince Caspian to summon help in his hour of need. Caspian has fled into the woods to escape his uncle, Miraz, who had usurped the throne. The children set out once again to save Narnia; and aided by other Narnians, and ultimately by Aslan, they return the throne to Caspian, the rightful ruler.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
Main article: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Completed in the winter of 1950 and published in 1952, The Voyage of the 『Dawn Treader』 returns Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their priggish cousin, Eustace Scrubb, to Narnia. Once there, they join Caspian's voyage to find the seven lords who were banished when Miraz took over the throne. This perilous journey brings them face to face with many wonders and dangers as they sail toward Aslan's country at the end of the world.

The Silver Chair (1953)
Main article: The Silver Chair
Completed in the spring of 1951 and published in 1953, The Silver Chair is the first Narnia book Lewis wrote without the Pevensie children. In their place, Aslan calls Eustace back to Narnia together with his classmate Jill Pole. There they are given four signs to find Prince Rilian, Caspian's son, who had been kidnapped ten years earlier. Eustace and Jill, with the help of Puddleglum the Marsh-wiggle and many others, face great danger before finding Rilian, who has lost his memory e to enchantment by a silver chair.

The Horse and His Boy (1954)
Main article: The Horse and His Boy
Completed in the spring of 1950 and published in 1954, The Horse and His Boy is the first of the books that does not follow the previous one sequentially. The novel takes place ring the reign of the Pevensies in Narnia, an era which begins and ends in the last chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The story is about Bree, a talking horse, and a young boy named Shasta. Both of the main characters have been held in bondage in Calormen, a country to the south of Narnia. By chance, they meet each other and plan their return to Narnia and freedom. On their journey they discover that the Calormenes are about to invade Archenland, and they plan to arrive there first to alert the King.

The Magician's Nephew (1955)
Main article: The Magician's Nephew
Completed in the winter of 1954 and published in 1955, the prequel The Magician's Nephew brings the reader back to the very beginning of Narnia where we learn how Aslan created the world and how evil first entered it. Digory Kirke and his friend Polly Plummer stumble into different worlds by experimenting with magic rings made by Digory's uncle (the titular "magician"), encounter Jadis (The White Witch), and witness the creation of Narnia. Many long-standing questions about Narnia are answered in the adventure that follows.

The Last Battle (1956)
Main article: The Last Battle
Completed in the spring of 1953 and published in 1956, The Last Battle chronicles the end of the world of Narnia. Jill and Eustace return to save Narnia from Shift, an ape, who tricks Puzzle, a donkey, into impersonating the lion Aslan. This problem causes a fierce battle between the Calormenes and King Tirian together with Jill, Eustace and a faithful dwarf.

At last I was alone with Gladys, and the moment of Fate had come! All that evening I had felt like the soldier who awaits the signal which will send him on a forlorn hope; hope of victory and fear of repulse alternating in his mind.
She sat with that proud, delicate profile of hers outlined against the red curtain. How beautiful she was! And yet how aloof! We had been friends, quite good friends; but never could I get beyond the same comradeship which I might have established with one of my fellow-reporters upon the Gazette,— perfectly frank, perfectly kindly, and perfectly unsexual. My instincts are all against a woman being too frank and at her ease with me. It is no compliment to a man. Where the real sex feeling begins, timidity and distrust are its companions, heritage from old wicked days when love and violence went often hand in hand. The bent head, the averted eye, the faltering voice, the wincing figure — these, and not the unshrinking gaze and frank reply, are the true signals of passion. Even in my short life I had learned as much as that — or had inherited it in that race memory which we call instinct.
Gladys was full of every womanly quality. Some judged her to be cold and hard; but such a thought was treason. That delicately bronzed skin, almost oriental in its coloring, that raven hair, the large liquid eyes, the full but exquisite lips,— all the stigmata of passion were there. But I was sadly conscious that up to now I had never found the secret of drawing it forth. However, come what might, I should have done with suspense and bring matters to a head to-night. She could but refuse me, and better be a repulsed lover than an accepted brother.
So far my thoughts had carried me, and I was about to break the long and uneasy silence, when two critical, dark eyes looked round at me, and the proud head was shaken in smiling reproof. 「I have a presentiment that you are going to propose, Ned. I do wish you wouldn』t; for things are so much nicer as they are.」
I drew my chair a little nearer. 「Now, how did you know that I was going to propose?」 I asked in genuine wonder.
「Don』t women always know? Do you suppose any woman in the world was ever taken unawares? But — oh, Ned, our friendship has been so good and so pleasant! What a pity to spoil it! Don』t you feel how splendid it is that a young man and a young woman should be able to talk face to face as we have talked?」
「I don』t know, Gladys. You see, I can talk face to face with — with the station-master.」 I can』t imagine how that official came into the matter; but in he trotted, and set us both laughing. 「That does not satisfy me in the least. I want my arms round you, and your head on my breast, and — oh, Gladys, I want ——」
She had sprung from her chair, as she saw signs that I proposed to demonstrate some of my wants. 「You』ve spoiled everything, Ned,」 she said. 「It』s all so beautiful and natural until this kind of thing comes in! It is such a pity! Why can』t you control yourself?」
「I didn』t invent it,」 I pleaded. 「It』s nature. It』s love.」
「Well, perhaps if both love, it may be different. I have never felt it.」
「But you must — you, with your beauty, with your soul! Oh, Gladys, you were made for love! You must love!」
「One must wait till it comes.」
「But why can』t you love me, Gladys? Is it my appearance, or what?」
She did unbend a little. She put forward a hand — such a gracious, stooping attitude it was — and she pressed back my head. Then she looked into my upturned face with a very wistful smile.
「No it isn』t that,」 she said at last. 「You』re not a conceited boy by nature, and so I can safely tell you it is not that. It』s deeper.」
「My character?」
She nodded severely.
「What can I do to mend it? Do sit down and talk it over. No, really, I won』t if you』ll only sit down!」
She looked at me with a wondering distrust which was much more to my mind than her whole-hearted confidence. How primitive and bestial it looks when you put it down in black and white!— and perhaps after all it is only a feeling peculiar to myself. Anyhow, she sat down.
「Now tell me what』s amiss with me?」
「I』m in love with somebody else,」 said she.
It was my turn to jump out of my chair.
「It』s nobody in particular,」 she explained, laughing at the expression of my face: 「only an ideal. I』ve never met the kind of man I mean.」
「Tell me about him. What does he look like?」
「Oh, he might look very much like you.」
「How dear of you to say that! Well, what is it that he does that I don』t do? Just say the word,— teetotal, vegetarian, aeronaut, theosophist, superman. I』ll have a try at it, Gladys, if you will only give me an idea what would please you.」

Another saying that is very popular is, 「Beauty is only skin deep.」 I do not believe that this statement is true for the reason that with all the cosmetic surgery, technology and make-up that we have in the world today beauty is bought and not natural. Beauty can also be determined by a person』s personality and not necessarily by their looks because the way a person presents him or herself can make all the difference in the world. The most unattractive person can also display beautiful characteristics and it will conceal their appearance. Is beauty only conveyed in one particular color? No, African Americans are proced in many different shades, vanilla, caramel, mocha, coffee and chocolate. Black is in fact beautiful and there is no other race that can measure up to the beauty that is displayed by African Americans. In my opinion, people should not focus solely on the outside appearance because that can damage ones self-esteem. Parents should raise their children to appreciate the thoughts and actions of a person opposed to the looks of a person. Our priorities in American today are not at all in order but maybe one-day society will learn that beauty is not everything.

相反的,我覺得以下這些國外主要的分級標准就嚴謹得多,首先這些分級機構都不是為了賣書,或者說有的評級機構幾十年來都沒有商業目的,所以也更學術一些,這也是在英語國家無論是學校或是家長都紛紛接受的原因。
A-Z分級法(GRL/Guided Reading Level),即按照26個字母順序將圖書分成26級;
Accelerated Reader (AR)分級法又稱為Grade Equivalent Level(GEL),評價讀者的閱讀水平等同於美國學生哪一年級第幾個月閱讀水平;
藍思(Lexile)分級,將讀者的閱讀水平與書的閱讀分級相對應;
91reading MM(MinMax)閱讀發展評價體系。
各分級方法側重點不同,談不上哪一種更加完美。因為分值之間有一個轉換表,如果家長能夠獲得孩子其中一個閱讀分值,就可以根據轉換表找到相對應的分值。
A-Z分級法(GRL/Guided Reading Level)
有很多國際學校用該方法將圖書按A-Z進行分級,共26級,從A到Z難度遞增,一級稱為一個GRL。我之前介紹過的國際學校常用的Raz-kids系統,採用的也是A-Z分級法。
A-Z是由凡塔斯和皮內爾兩位閱讀專家(Fountas &Pinnell)開發的一套圖書分級系統。在其官網上已有32000種圖書被分級,且在線分級書單每月更新。A-Z法是一個應用較廣泛的分級方法,很多資料庫採用其分級作為檢索項,或用以標注圖書級別。
該分級系統的特點是將主觀因素與客觀因素相結合,既有一套電腦運作的測試程序,也依靠人工。測試標準的主要因素包括:全文詞彙數量、單詞數量、高頻詞彙數量 與比例、低頻詞彙數量與比例、句子長度、句子復雜度、句義明晰度、句式、印刷規格、每頁詞彙數、插圖信息量、思想深度、主題熟悉度等。其中客觀因素靠電腦 分析,主觀因素如圖例、句子復雜度、思想內涵等則靠訓練有素的分級閱讀專家進行分析。
A-Z法的特色
由於該分級標准將圖書的主觀因素和客觀因素綜合考慮,採用電腦軟體和專家分析相結合的辦法,從而避免了藍思的「機械化」,但是這樣也造成該標准不能應用於所有圖書,而必須依靠專家鑒定。所有通過這個系統可選擇的圖書比較有限。
如果說藍思分級側重語言訓練和讀物難度,A-Z法則在難度基礎上更看重圖書的內容、深度、印刷等主觀要素,因而它對少兒的閱讀培養來說,更具針對性和推廣意義。所以,很多國際學校使用這個分級體系的英文圖書為學生上Guided Reading課。
其不足之處在於它只有對英文書的分級,而沒有對讀者英文閱讀水平的測試,不過由於和DRA等閱讀水平檢測方法配合使用,這一缺陷得到彌補。另外,該分級最多到Z(美國小學六年級水平),這樣英文閱讀水平達到及超過美國初中水平的孩子就不適合使用這套系統。

我們學校曾經統一訂過《書蟲》,裡面是一半英文一半中文,所選均為名著,但是裡面的英文全被刪刪減減,基本上都沒有原來的味道了。所以不推薦。
我平時不會特地買書來看,而是訂閱雜志和報紙。我推薦Teens。很不錯,適合高中生閱讀,里生活很近。還有就是瘋狂英語,這本雜志很好,美文有很多,經常看水平會有提高。
其實我覺得你看什麼都可以,關鍵就是詞彙的積累和語言的理解。生活中的英語很靈活,名著也是要看很多遍的。既然你想要提高,就應該一本書多看幾遍。
