The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis. It is considered a classic of children's literature and is the author's best-known work, having sold over 120 million copies in 41 languages. Written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954 and illustrated by Pauline Baynes, The Chronicles of Narnia have been adapted several times, complete or in part, for radio, television, stage, and cinema. In addition to numerous traditional Christian themes, the series borrows characters and ideas from Greek and Roman mythology, as well as from traditional British and Irish fairy tales.

The Chronicles of Narnia present the adventures of children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the fictional realm of Narnia, a place where animals talk, magic is common, and good battles evil. Each of the books (with the exception of The Horse and His Boy) features as its protagonists children from our world who are magically transported to Narnia, where they are called upon to help the Lion Aslan handle a crisis in the world of Narnia.

The seven books
The Chronicles of Narnia have been in continuous publication since 1954 and have sold over 100 million copies in 41 languages.[1][2] Lewis was awarded the 1956 Carnegie Medal for The Last Battle, the final book in the Narnia series. The books were written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954 but were written in neither the order they were originally published nor in the chronological order in which they are currently presented.[3] The original illustrator was Pauline Baynes and her pen and ink drawings are still used in publication today. The seven books that make up The Chronicles of Narnia are presented here in the order in which they were originally published (see reading order below). Completion dates for the novels are English (Northern Hemisphere) seasons.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
Main article: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, completed in the winter of 1949[3] and published in 1950, tells the story of four ordinary children: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie. They discover a wardrobe in Professor Digory Kirke's house that leads to the magical land of Narnia, which is currently under the spell of the evil White Witch. The four children fulfill an ancient, mysterious prophecy while in Narnia. The Pevensie children help Aslan (Aslan is the Turkish word for lion) and his army save Narnia from the evil White Witch, who has reigned over the kingdom of Narnia in winter for 100 years.

Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
Main article: Prince Caspian
Completed in the autumn of 1949 and published in 1951, Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia tells the story of the Pevensie children's second trip to Narnia. They are drawn back by the power of Susan's horn, blown by Prince Caspian to summon help in his hour of need. Caspian has fled into the woods to escape his uncle, Miraz, who had usurped the throne. The children set out once again to save Narnia; and aided by other Narnians, and ultimately by Aslan, they return the throne to Caspian, the rightful ruler.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
Main article: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Completed in the winter of 1950 and published in 1952, The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader’ returns Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their priggish cousin, Eustace Scrubb, to Narnia. Once there, they join Caspian's voyage to find the seven lords who were banished when Miraz took over the throne. This perilous journey brings them face to face with many wonders and dangers as they sail toward Aslan's country at the end of the world.

The Silver Chair (1953)
Main article: The Silver Chair
Completed in the spring of 1951 and published in 1953, The Silver Chair is the first Narnia book Lewis wrote without the Pevensie children. In their place, Aslan calls Eustace back to Narnia together with his classmate Jill Pole. There they are given four signs to find Prince Rilian, Caspian's son, who had been kidnapped ten years earlier. Eustace and Jill, with the help of Puddleglum the Marsh-wiggle and many others, face great danger before finding Rilian, who has lost his memory e to enchantment by a silver chair.

The Horse and His Boy (1954)
Main article: The Horse and His Boy
Completed in the spring of 1950 and published in 1954, The Horse and His Boy is the first of the books that does not follow the previous one sequentially. The novel takes place ring the reign of the Pevensies in Narnia, an era which begins and ends in the last chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The story is about Bree, a talking horse, and a young boy named Shasta. Both of the main characters have been held in bondage in Calormen, a country to the south of Narnia. By chance, they meet each other and plan their return to Narnia and freedom. On their journey they discover that the Calormenes are about to invade Archenland, and they plan to arrive there first to alert the King.

The Magician's Nephew (1955)
Main article: The Magician's Nephew
Completed in the winter of 1954 and published in 1955, the prequel The Magician's Nephew brings the reader back to the very beginning of Narnia where we learn how Aslan created the world and how evil first entered it. Digory Kirke and his friend Polly Plummer stumble into different worlds by experimenting with magic rings made by Digory's uncle (the titular "magician"), encounter Jadis (The White Witch), and witness the creation of Narnia. Many long-standing questions about Narnia are answered in the adventure that follows.

The Last Battle (1956)
Main article: The Last Battle
Completed in the spring of 1953 and published in 1956, The Last Battle chronicles the end of the world of Narnia. Jill and Eustace return to save Narnia from Shift, an ape, who tricks Puzzle, a donkey, into impersonating the lion Aslan. This problem causes a fierce battle between the Calormenes and King Tirian together with Jill, Eustace and a faithful dwarf.

She sat with that proud, delicate profile of hers outlined against the red curtain. How beautiful she was! And yet how aloof! We had been friends, quite good friends; but never could I get beyond the same comradeship which I might have established with one of my fellow-reporters upon the Gazette,— perfectly frank, perfectly kindly, and perfectly unsexual. Even in my short life I had learned as much as that — or had inherited it in that race memory which we call instinct.
Gladys was full of every womanly quality. Some judged her to be cold and hard; but such a thought was treason. That delicately bronzed skin, almost oriental in its coloring, that raven hair, the large liquid eyes, the full but exquisite lips,— all the stigmata of passion were there. But I was sadly conscious that up to now I had never found the secret of drawing it forth. However, come what might, I should have done with suspense and bring matters to a head to-night. She could but refuse me, and better be a repulsed lover than an accepted brother.
So far my thoughts had carried me, and I was about to break the long and uneasy silence, when two critical, dark eyes looked round at me, and the proud head was shaken in smiling reproof. “I have a presentiment that you are going to propose, Ned. I do wish you wouldn’t; for things are so much nicer as they are.”
I drew my chair a little nearer. “Now, how did you know that I was going to propose?” I asked in genuine wonder.
“Don’t women always know? Do you suppose any woman in the world was ever taken unawares? But — oh, Ned, our friendship has been so good and so pleasant! What a pity to spoil it! Don’t you feel how splendid it is that a young man and a young woman should be able to talk face to face as we have talked?”
“I don’t know, Gladys. You see, I can talk face to face with — with the station-master.” I can’t imagine how that official came into the matter; but in he trotted, and set us both laughing. “That does not satisfy me in the least. I want my arms round you, and your head on my breast, and — oh, Gladys, I want ——”
She had sprung from her chair, as she saw signs that I proposed to demonstrate some of my wants. “You’ve spoiled everything, Ned,” she said. “It’s all so beautiful and natural until this kind of thing comes in! It is such a pity! Why can’t you control yourself?”
“I didn’t invent it,” I pleaded. “It’s nature. It’s love.”
“Well, perhaps if both love, it may be different. I have never felt it.”
“But you must — you, with your beauty, with your soul! Oh, Gladys, you were made for love! You must love!”
“One must wait till it comes.”
“But why can’t you love me, Gladys? Is it my appearance, or what?”
She did unbend a little. She put forward a hand — such a gracious, stooping attitude it was — and she pressed back my head. Then she looked into my upturned face with a very wistful smile.
“No it isn’t that,” she said at last. “You’re not a conceited boy by nature, and so I can safely tell you it is not that. It’s deeper.”
“My character?”
She nodded severely.
“What can I do to mend it? Do sit down and talk it over. No, really, I won’t if you’ll only sit down!”
She looked at me with a wondering distrust which was much more to my mind than her whole-hearted confidence. How primitive and bestial it looks when you put it down in black and white!— and perhaps after all it is only a feeling peculiar to myself. Anyhow, she sat down.
“Now tell me what’s amiss with me?”
“I’m in love with somebody else,” said she.
It was my turn to jump out of my chair.
“It’s nobody in particular,” she explained, laughing at the expression of my face: “only an ideal. I’ve never met the kind of man I mean.”
“Tell me about him. What does he look like?”
“Oh, he might look very much like you.”

Another saying that is very popular is, “Beauty is only skin deep.” I do not believe that this statement is true for the reason that with all the cosmetic surgery, technology and make-up that we have in the world today beauty is bought and not natural. Beauty can also be determined by a person’s personality and not necessarily by their looks because the way a person presents him or herself can make all the difference in the world. The most unattractive person can also display beautiful characteristics and it will conceal their appearance. Is beauty only conveyed in one particular color? No, African Americans are proced in many different shades, vanilla, caramel, mocha, coffee and chocolate. Black is in fact beautiful and there is no other race that can measure up to the beauty that is displayed by African Americans. In my opinion, people should not focus solely on the outside appearance because that can damage ones self-esteem. Parents should raise their children to appreciate the thoughts and actions of a person opposed to the looks of a person. Our priorities in American today are not at all in order but maybe one-day society will learn that beauty is not everything.

相反的,我觉得以下这些国外主要的分级标准就严谨得多,首先这些分级机构都不是为了卖书,或者说有的评级机构几十年来都没有商业目的,所以也更学术一些,这也是在英语国家无论是学校或是家长都纷纷接受的原因。
A-Z分级法(GRL/Guided Reading Level),即按照26个字母顺序将图书分成26级;
Accelerated Reader (AR)分级法又称为Grade Equivalent Level(GEL),评价读者的阅读水平等同于美国学生哪一年级第几个月阅读水平;
蓝思(Lexile)分级,将读者的阅读水平与书的阅读分级相对应;
91reading MM(MinMax)阅读发展评价体系。
各分级方法侧重点不同,谈不上哪一种更加完美。因为分值之间有一个转换表,如果家长能够获得孩子其中一个阅读分值,就可以根据转换表找到相对应的分值。
A-Z分级法(GRL/Guided Reading Level)
有很多国际学校用该方法将图书按A-Z进行分级,共26级,从A到Z难度递增,一级称为一个GRL。我之前介绍过的国际学校常用的Raz-kids系统,采用的也是A-Z分级法。
A-Z是由凡塔斯和皮内尔两位阅读专家(Fountas &Pinnell)开发的一套图书分级系统。在其官网上已有32000种图书被分级,且在线分级书单每月更新。A-Z法是一个应用较广泛的分级方法,很多数据库采用其分级作为检索项,或用以标注图书级别。
该分级系统的特点是将主观因素与客观因素相结合,既有一套电脑运作的测试程序,也依靠人工。测试标准的主要因素包括:全文词汇数量、单词数量、高频词汇数量 与比例、低频词汇数量与比例、句子长度、句子复杂度、句义明晰度、句式、印刷规格、每页词汇数、插图信息量、思想深度、主题熟悉度等。其中客观因素靠电脑 分析,主观因素如图例、句子复杂度、思想内涵等则靠训练有素的分级阅读专家进行分析。
A-Z法的特色
由于该分级标准将图书的主观因素和客观因素综合考虑,采用电脑软件和专家分析相结合的办法,从而避免了蓝思的“机械化”,但是这样也造成该标准不能应用于所有图书,而必须依靠专家鉴定。所有通过这个系统可选择的图书比较有限。
如果说蓝思分级侧重语言训练和读物难度,A-Z法则在难度基础上更看重图书的内容、深度、印刷等主观要素,因而它对少儿的阅读培养来说,更具针对性和推广意义。所以,很多国际学校使用这个分级体系的英文图书为学生上Guided Reading课。
其不足之处在于它只有对英文书的分级,而没有对读者英文阅读水平的测试,不过由于和DRA等阅读水平检测方法配合使用,这一缺陷得到弥补。另外,该分级最多到Z(美国小学六年级水平),这样英文阅读水平达到及超过美国初中水平的孩子就不适合使用这套系统。

我们学校曾经统一订过《书虫》,里面是一半英文一半中文,所选均为名著,但是里面的英文全被删删减减,基本上都没有原来的味道了。所以不推荐。
我平时不会特地买书来看,而是订阅杂志和报纸。我推荐Teens。很不错,适合高中生阅读,里生活很近。还有就是疯狂英语,这本杂志很好,美文有很多,经常看水平会有提高。
其实我觉得你看什么都可以,关键就是词汇的积累和语言的理解。生活中的英语很灵活,名著也是要看很多遍的。既然你想要提高,就应该一本书多看几遍。
